Statement: Nippon Sei Ko Kai

We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of the Right Reverend James T. Yashiro, Primate of the Nippon Sei Ko Kai and Bishop of the Diocese of Kitakanto. He passed away at 11:40 pm on March 12 in Murayama Hospital near his residence at the age of 65. He succumbed to respiratory failure after a long illness.

The Diocese of Newark in America has just passed a resolution on Hong Kong at its annual convention. The Resolution states:

Resolved, that this 123rd Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark calls upon our Primate to insist on a full and thorough review by officials of the Anglican Communion of proposals underway in the Diocese of Hong Kong to split itself into three dioceses and declare itself an independent province.

China: Assurances on Religion to Hong Kong

The Beijing government's Religious Affairs Bureau (RAB) will not set up an office in Hong Kong, nor will it implement religious regulations or policy after the territory's return to Chinese sovereignty in July next year. This assurance was given by Beijing's leading official on religion, Ye Xiaowen, head of the RAB in the Chinese capital, to religious leaders in Hong Kong.

The Rt Revd Ignacio Capuyan Soliba, Bishop of Northern Luzon, has been chosen as third Prime Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the Philippines at the Church's June Synod. He will be installed early next year upon the retirement of the Most Revd Narcisco Ticobay.

Bishops Veto Women Priests

Japan's Anglican bishops have vetoed moves to ordain women as priests. According to the Church Times, in London, the General Synod of Japan's Anglican Church, Nippon Sei Ko Kai, rejected moves to ordain women priests after the bishops voted six to four against the proposal.
