This report stands in obedience to God's gift of Unity and God's calling to all Christians to make that Unity visible. Both our churches agreed that the process would be undertaken by stages, which in the experience of the Church of England has worked well in our conversations with the Lutheran Churches in Scandinavia and the German and French Protestant Churches.

Like many who will read this report I am disappointed that it does not go a lot further than it does. It does, however, achieve the purpose for which our joint Commission was set up.

The Covenant, if accepted by both churches, would be a mutual affirmation for the first time of the life and ministry of each other's churches. It could then be likened to an engagement to be married. It would be a formal, joint commitment to work together towards fuller visible unity.

We live in a tumultuous and restless time. The post-September 11th world has left many fearful for their security and uncertain about the future. The words 'terrorism' and 'terrorist' have become routine in people's conversations. Suspicion and doubt about others are becoming all too common.

Wales is to have a new Archbishop - Guide Rhian Hartshorn, 12 is to step into the Archbishop of Wales's shoes for a day in aid of the BBC Children in Need appeal. In turn, Most Rev Dr Rowan Williams, is to take her place at Oakdale Comprehensive School for the day and will follow her time-table.

The horrendous events of 11th September have forced the people of America, of this country and of the whole Western world to discover what much of the rest of the world knows only too well: the terror of sudden violence: the fearful uncertainty of what lies ahead; and the unsettling sense of loosing control over what happens in our lives.
