Churches discuss falling numbers

(ENI)At an historic meeting in Cyprus, 20 leaders of Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant churches in the Middle East have called attention to the falling numbers and resources of Christians living in the region where Christianity began. The church leaders attending the high-level meeting also promised to cooperate with each other and with their Muslim neighbours to overcome difficulties faced by Christians.

Two versions of the Lord's Prayer will appear in the Church of England's new service books - Common Worship -, the new modern version and the modified traditional version. The modern translation replaces the phrase "And lead us not into temptation" with "Save us from the time of trial" and the word "trespass" has become "sin".

Millennium Youth Event

Millennium Youth Event

(CT/ACNS) Plans are well underway for a national Christian youth festival in London organised by the Archbishop of Canterbury's youth team. The event will happen in May 1999 and is entitled - The Time of Our Lives. It is hoped that 5,000 young Anglicans from all the dioceses of the Church will take part in a weekend of music, comedy, clubbing and cabaret and worship. Bishops have been encouraged to send 100 young people from each of their dioceses to the even. The climax of the event will be a Eucharist celebrated by the Archbishop in the Wembley Arena.

Anglican Priest murdered in Italy

I was deeply distressed to hear the news of Father Gregory's death. He was a faithful and committed priest with a transparent love for God and his people. Father Gregory had served the diocese well in Tangier and now for a tragically short time in Milan. He will be missed greatly both in All Saints, Milan and throughout the diocese. We offer prayers for his family, friends and colleagues, his congregation and for himself, thanking God for his ministry and friendship.

Former Primus dies

Former Primus dies

The Rt Revd Alastair Haggart, former Bishop of Edinburgh and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, died on Sunday 11th January aged 82. The former Primus was a well known figure in international Anglican meetings. He was elected Vice Chairman of ACC from 1981 and served until 1985. In 1988 he underwent a coronary by-pass operation but shortly afterwards took part in the 1988 Lambeth Conference of Bishops where he was Chaplain.

(CEN) Before Christmas the British Government launched the Mauritius Mandate, a five point plan to help resolve the debt problems of the poorer countries of the world and to enable them to reach a point of sustainable growth. The launch was attended by the Archbishop of Canterbury and Cardinal Hume of the Roman Catholic Church.
