USA: Bishop Righter objectors seek new canon

Following the decision on the "Righter trial" 10 bishops in the USA are to propose that the 1997 General Convention of ECUSA should adopt a canon obliging members of the clergy to abstain from sexual relations outside marriage. This canon, if adopted, would effectively bar the ordination of non-celibate homosexuals as priests.

The 10 bishops have rejected the court's decision on the trial of Bishop Righter as being "flawed and erroneous". They have said that they would not "ordain admit or license" clergy who would not subscribe to their proposed canon. They have also said that they will be creating a "fellowship of Episcopal parishes and dioceses which uphold scriptural authority", to support congregations in dioceses where "the bishop has departed from the standards and norms set forth by the Church's teaching".
