Canadian Church Fights Abuse Lawsuits

Controversy over Church run native residential schools could erupt again as the Anglican Church of Canada defends itself against two lawsuits by former students.

The suits are the first filed against the Church because of its connection with residential schools. In 1993, the Church apologised for the detrimental effects of its role in residential schools. But it is fighting these lawsuits because it says the federal government, not the Church, ran the two institutions concerned.
