At the recent Provincial Synod meeting of the Anglican Province (May 26-29, 1999) a move to allow the ordination of women as presbyters (priests) was narrowly defeated.

A majority voted in favour of the motion but there was not a 2/3 majority vote needed for it to pass. The Province does have women deacons.

The Synod, held in Montevideo, Uruguay, welcomed the Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, to a pre-synod gathering on May 26 on the last portion of Dr Carey's two-week visit to South America.
