The Venerable David Chillingworth has been elected as the new Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane in the Scottish Episcopal Church at a meeting of the Electoral Synod today in Perth. He will succeed the Rt Revd Michael Henley who retired as Bishop of the Diocese of St Andrews, Dunkeld Dunblane in July this year.
David Chillingworth is presently Archdeacon of Dromore, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. On hearing the news of his election (the candidates were not present at the electoral meeting) Archdeacon Chillingworth said "I am delighted and very humbled to have been elected Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane. Alison and I will be very sorry to leave Ireland but we look forward with excitement to sharing ministry and friendship with the clergy and people of the Diocese."
The Electoral Synod meeting was chaired by the Most Revd Bruce Cameron, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, who says "I look forward very much to welcoming David as a colleague and member of the College of Bishops. He is one who brings many gifts to his episcopal ministry, which I feel sure will enrich both the Diocese of St Andrews and the wider church. The Diocese, I know, will give him a very warm welcome when he is consecrated on 2nd March next year."
Archdeacon Chillingworth is married to Alison, a senior social worker. They have two sons and a daughter.
The Bishop-Elect will be consecrated and installed at a service planned for 2 March 2005 in St Ninian's Cathedral, Perth.
