The Archbishop of Myanmar, Stephen Than Myint Oo has revealed that, during his time in prison, he planned to kill himself and that it was God's intervention that stopped him.
In the latest Anglican World magazine, Archbishop Stephen tells journalist Mark Brolly that 30 years ago, after two years imprisonment by the ruling military junta, he prepared to end his life.
"As Stephen prepared to die," writes Brolly, "he saw a purple cross come towards him and felt it touch his forehead. He fell back, unconscious, and felt himself going down towards a very bright white light, when he heard a soft clear voice say, 'My son, I am with you always', before waking up."
That experience persuaded the young man to live and, in time, he trained for the priesthood and, ultimately, would become the most senior Anglican in the country.
Archbishop Stephen's story is one of a range of articles about Anglican life and mission from countries including Bangladesh, the USA, England, Wales, Uganda and Sri Lankain, all in the latest edition of Anglican World magazine .
Topics include youth philanthropists, tackling arsenic-contaminated water, pioneer ministry, a global gathering of Anglican Communion women and, of course, the inauguration of Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.
Full colour throughout its 24 pages, the magazine only costs £2.50 a quarter (£10 a year!) and contains the best of Anglican and Episcopalian life and work from around the Communion.
