The Dean of Auckland’s Holy Trinity Cathedral is relieved that her husband, Paul Kelly-Moore, detected an arson attack on the historic St Mary’s Church this morning at 3:30am.
From the nearby deanery Paul saw flames engulfing one of the porches and called the Fire Service.
Dean Jo Kelly-Moore says the quick response stopped the fire spreading. “I’m so glad we live nearby and were able to respond so quickly.
“My husband really saved the day as the fire could have easily caused a great deal more damage, which is horrible to even contemplate for such a historic building.”
Paul used a fire extinguisher and had help from neighbours until the Fire Service arrived. Damage to the porch is significant but not structural, and it will be business as usual in a few days once the church is aired and cleaned up.
St Mary’s was built in 1886, largely in kauri. It has a Category One classification from the Historic Places Trust.
Dean Jo says it is sad and surprising that anyone would have total disregard for such a community treasure.
“St Mary’s is a special building for our city. It is a place of gathering, and the arson attack has understandably left people quite emotional and shocked.”
Insurance assessors and builders will now evaluate the damage.
Dean Jo is also grateful for the quick response from firefighters and police. One firefighter commented that the church will always be protected on their watch.
