A new bishop has been elected by the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) at the Episcopal Synod during the annual Bishops’ Retreat held at the Ibru Ecumenical Retreat Center Agbarha-Otor, Delta state on Thursday, 9th January, 2014.

He is the Ven. Michael Adebayo Oluwarohunbi, the Supervising Priest of the Cathedral Church of the Advent Life Camp Abuja and General Secretary Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion.

A Political Science graduate of the University of Ife (now OAU), Ven. Oluwarohunbi had his Masters degree in Business Administration University of Ilorin and Bachelor of Divinity of the Theological College of Northern Nigeria (TCNN).

He worked as a Career officer spanning twenty-five years in the Public Service and rose to become an Assistant Director before he retired voluntarily in 2009.

He has worked in many cadres as a civil servant and has travelled widely. The bishop-elect was ordained a deacon in December 1998, ordained Priest 1999, preferred Canon 2006 and Venerable 2009.

Venerable Oluwarohunbi was appointed the General Secretary Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) in March 2010, the position he is currently occupying. He is happily married to Mrs Grace Oluwarohunbi and blessed with three children.

He succeeds the Rt Revd Simeon Adebola, the Bishop of Yewa Anglican diocese, who is retiring after the mandatory 70 years. The Venerable Oluwarohunbi will be consecrated Bishop at the Cathedral Church of St James the Great, Okebola Ibadan, Oyo state on Tuesday, 18 February, 2014, during the Standing Committee meeting being hosted by the Ecclesiastical Province of Ibadan.

As a result of this election the position of the General Secretary (Church of Nigeria) is now vacant. Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified clergymen for appointment into the position.

Duties:

The General Secretary, who shall not be a vicar of any church, shall be the Head of the Church of Nigeria Secretariat and will be directly responsible to the Primate. He will be required to fulfil the following functions:

  • Co-ordinate all administrative matters on day to day basis
  • Process matters from the Provinces/Dioceses for the Primate’s consideration
  • Co-ordinate the activities of the departments/directorates/units at the Episcopal Secretariat
  • Provide Secretarial support services at all the national ecclesiastical meetings, i.e. General Synod, Standing Committees, etc.
  • Maintain close liaison with the Secretariat of GAFCON, the Global South, CAPA, ACO and other international bodies as directed by the Primate of All Nigeria
  • Be responsible for information dissemination and implementation of policies and decisions of the church
  • Co-ordinate all Registry matters
  • Be responsible for keeping records and update the data of Archbishops/Bishops
  • Perform any other duties assigned to him by the Primate.
