Bible Society Malaysia tells authorities: "Bibles not subversive"

The Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) hit out at the Selangor Islamic authorities for suggesting that the seized Bibles be disposed of, as the row over the holy books escalated.

BSM president, Bishop Datuk Ng Moon Hing said in a statement it was "absolutely unacceptable" for the Islamic authorities to speak in such a manner given the fact that Bibles are not subversive documents.

"Bibles are religious books of the Christian community. Under what civil law do they purport to have the authority to even suggest such an act," Ng questioned.

In an earlier report, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) had said they do not want to return the Malay and Iban language Bibles despite the Attorney-General announcing Jais had erred when they raided BSM six months ago.
