The Anglican Church of Mexico has elected The Most Revd Sally Sue Hernández García as new Primate. She will replace the Most Revd Enrique Treviño Cruz.
A Communique shared on 21 March by Muy Revda Belina Carranza Lopez, the Secretary General of the Province, said:
‘On this day, the Extraordinary General Synod of the Anglican Church of Mexico was held, duly convened and attended by delegations from the five dioceses that make up our Province, for the election of the Primate; we are pleased to announce that the Most Rev. Alba Sally Sue Hernández García has been elected as Primate of the Anglican Church of Mexico.
‘We celebrate with faith and hope, praying to our Lord Jesus Christ that this event will bring renewal and continuity to the mission and ministry of the Church, inspire us to bear witness to God’s transforming love in our lives, and enable us to continue on this path together, steadfast and moving forward.
‘We join in prayer for the various leaders and ask for your prayers for the ministry of our Primate Bishop Sally Sue Hernández García.’
Archbishop Alba Sally Sue Hernández García was born on June 23, 1977, in Mexico City. Her formation in the Licentiate of Theology was at the Seminary of San Andrés, Mexico City and at Ripon College in Oxford, England. She was ordained to the diaconate on September 3, 2006, to the priesthood on April 28, 2007 and to the episcopate on January 29, 2022.
Her ministerial experience has been as Dean of the Cathedral of San José de Gracia, as formator and chaplain at St. Andrew's Seminary, as pastoral officer diocesan youth and pastoral care for women.
She was the VII Bishop of the Diocese of Mexico, based in Mexico City. The jurisdiction of the diocese covers Mexico City as well as six states: Michoacán, Hidalgo, Querétaro, Guanajuato (San Miguel de Allende), the state of Mexico, and Tlaxcala.
Archbishop Sally Sue is also involved in a number of Anglican Communion initiatives, participating on the Commission Theological for the Anglican Communion (CTEAC) and as a representative of the Anglican Church of Mexico on the International Anglican Roman Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission, (IARCCUM).
The Anglican Church of Mexico works alongside the Episcopal Church of the United States in mission, and in 1994 it was established as an Autonomous Province of the Anglican Communion comprising five dioceses: the Diocese of Mexico, the Anglican Diocese of Cuernavaca, the Northern Diocese, the Western Diocese and the South-Eastern Diocese.
