A group of prominent Church leaders in the United States has called upon President Bill Clinton to honour the 1977 Panama Canal Treaties and totally withdraw U.S. military forces from Panama by the end of 1999. The letter also reminded President Clinton that the U.S. Government bears responsibility to clean up toxic wastes left behind at firing ranges and military installations in the country. And it urged President Clinton not to use plans for a regional drug centre to mask activities that would include training Latin American military officials in techniques of repression.

A Guatemalan Church leader is afraid that peace will mean an end to international support for justice and reconciliation in Guatemala. "Once peace has been signed on a piece of paper, we'll be left alone," warned Miguel Palacios, an Anglican priest and long-time peace activist in the country.

Yesterday, 6th November, 1996, was a memorable day in the history of Chile. The House of Deputies debated and passed a Bill establishing norms regulating the recognition and funtioning of churches, religious confessions and organizations in the country. There were 91 votes in favour, and none against.
