Churches offer sanctuary after High Court refugee setback

Churches in Australia are offering sanctuary to refugees after the country’s High Court ruled that it was lawful for the government to return some 270 asylum seekers – including almost 40 children – to off-shore detention camps.

"Action" call as 26 refugees drown off Greece

Ten children – five boys and five girls – are amongst 26 Kurdish refugees from Iraq who have been confirmed to have drowned off the coast of Samos Island in Greece yesterday, the Anglican mission agency United Society (formerly USPG) say.

Way of the Cross on US Mexico border

Anglicans from Mexico and the United States will gather for a cross-border Eucharist service on the day before Palm Sunday in a park that straddles the border between Tijuana and San Diego. The congregations will pray the stations of the cross with the last station at the border. The event is organised to draw attention to the plight of immigrants.

Canadian Anglicans pledge $300k for displaced Syrians

More much-needed necessities will soon be on their way to families displaced by the war in Syria after the Anglican Church of Canada's Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund announced a $300,000 grant for necessities of life such as food, water, shelter, clothing, schooling, blankets, livelihood support, counselling and other forms of aid.

There is a need for “urgent action to strengthen coordination and cooperation in Europe's response to the refugee and migrant crisis,” a high level conference of governments, UN agencies, churches and civil society organisations heard this week. The conference was organised by the WCC and focused on ways to strengthen coordinated responses to the crisis.

A dangerous “horror” location on the Greek island of Lesbos has been turned into a 24-hour reception centre offering shelter, food and medical care to vulnerable refugees by the church-based Lighthouse Refugee Relief (LRR) agency using funds provided through the Anglican mission agency United Society’s Rapid Response Appeal.
