Churches throughout England have responded to a call from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York for a “great wave of prayer” in the week leading up to Pentecost Sunday for the re-evangelisation of England. Dubbed, Thy Kingdom Come, the week will see 24/7 prayer rotas, open prayer times and special services.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has thanked journalists for their role in “challenging weakness, exposing wrongdoing, asking awkward questions and holding the Church to account.” Speaking to Journalists in Lusaka Airport at the end of a press conference, he thanked them for the work they did and asked them if he could pray for them.

The Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Michael Curry, has called on his members to hold a season of prayer for regions of the Anglican Communion which are experiencing violence and civil strife. “In this season of Resurrection, I call on everyone to pray for our brothers and sisters in areas where there is much burden and little hope,” Bishop Curry said.

In an “unprecedented step”, Justin Welby and John Sentamu have written to every parish priest in the Church of England, inviting churches across the country to take part in the focused prayer initiative in the week leading up to Pentecost Sunday.
