Two weeks away from the family feels like a very long time - however lovely the scenery, however friendly the locals. Something absurd happens, someone says something odd or amusing; and I think, 'I must tell my wife, she'd love that.' I look at advertisements in a local paper and think, 'The children would enjoy that.'

Prior to the arrival of the Primates of the Anglican Communion, the Inter Anglican Finance Committee headed by the Most Revd Robin Eames, Primate of Ireland and the Standing Committees of the Primates and the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) will have met at Kanuga.

Plans for the 2001 meeting of the Primates of the Anglican Communion are in the final stages. The Archbishop of Canterbury envisions the annual meetings of the primates as a time of mutual support and spiritual refreshment for those called to lead the provinces of the Anglican Communion.

We have been enriched by a study of Ephesians led by David Ford, Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University, which explored dimensions of the mystery of the Church and the holiness of our vocation and ministry.

It is good to be here in Oporto and to be with you for our meeting together. It is of course the first time we have all met since Lambeth, and we have a great deal to do in these few days; and we will inevitably be conscious of the high degree of interest and expectation around the Communion.
