The Episcopal Church Foundation, one of the most successful independent Episcopal Church ventures, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The Foundation was born out of the rising determination of post World War II commitment and the vision of the Episcopal Church's first full-time Presiding Bishop, Henry Knox Sherrill. This morning, Steve Hinds, one of our paritioners at Christ Church, Denver began his 2-day journey to Honduras with his 1942 twin-engine Beech filled with medical and other supplies for the relief effort. He will be there for two weeks flying missions into cut-off locations under the direction of the Honduran military authorities. Among his cargo are several large boxes of seed packets that will be delivered directly to Bishop Frade for distribution.

Bishop Leo Frade of Honduras began one of his dozens of missives to friends and supporters, governments and church relief offices with those words the first week of November. As the winds and rain of Hurricane Mitch tore at his country, Frade's e-mail notes and occasional cell phone calls became increasingly insistent, increasingly ominous as he sought support to help the terrified. (ENS) I welcome the draft proposal "Called to Common Mission, A Lutheran Proposal for a Revision of the Concordat of Agreement," released by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The original Concordat of Agreement was passed overwhelmingly in the summer of 1997 by the Episcopal Church's General Convention and then narrowly defeated by the Churchwide Assembly of the ELCA. The Assembly determined that the Concordat should be revised and the revision presented to them for approval in the summer of 1999.

(ENS) The occasion of the 30th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr (4th April) provides all of us with an opportunity to pause and reflect on the current status of race relations in America and in our churches. While we offer thanksgivings for the contribution of Dr. King's legacy as a non-violent advocate for racial equality, we might best serve his memory with a commitment to continuing in the journey he led so faithfully.

(ENS)John Maury Allin, the 23rd Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church from 1973-1985, died 6 March, 1998, after suffering a stroke while undergoing treatment for cancer. He was 76.
