Twenty thousand people are dying of AIDS-related illnesses every year in Swaziland. National life-expectancy is to drop to just 27 from 62 by 2010. The most productive section of society (around 30 years old) has effectively been wiped out, wrecking the country, which has already been crippled by drought and economic disintegration.

The Diocese of Central Zimbabwe is planning an extensive food relief programme as the region is suffering a fourth year of major food shortages. The relief will be undertaken in conjunction with the Church’s HIV/AIDS programmes, as these programmes already have an existing support network, though resources are likely to be stretched to their limit.

In attendance were the Rt Revd Dr Jo Seoka, the Bishop of Pretoria and the Rt Revd Dr Peter Adebiyi, the Bishop of Lagos West.
