Some 20 million people are refugees and 21 million are victims of human trafficking. St James’ Episcopal Church in Elmhurst, Queens, has held a day-conference to raise awareness of the issue and to hear from migrant workers who, having survived the clutches of human traffickers, have gone on to become advocates for other victims.

A task group has been appointed to “maintain conversation” among the Primates of the Anglican Communion as requested by the Primates during their meeting in January. The Primates asked the Archbishop of Canterbury to establish the group as part of their commitment to “walk together” despite “deep differences”.

An Anglican seminary is to open in the Arctic as the Arthur Turner Training School (ATTS) re-opens, almost a decade after it closed. When it re-opens, the ATTS will operate from its new home at St Jude’s Cathedral in Iqaluit, thanks to a $50,000 CAD (approximately £26,750 GBP) return from the Anglican Church of Canada’s Resolution Corporation.

The completion of a 25-year translation project has resulted in the first Éxnet Sur Bible translation for the Southern Enxet people, an indigenous group from the Gran Chaco region of western Paraguay. The work is the result of a collaboration between the Anglican Church of Paraguay, CMS, and the Paraguayan Bible Society.

Canadian officials are using military and civilian planes to rescue 8,000 people trapped by the growing wildfire in the Fort McMurray area. The town’s 88,000 population were evacuated this week but the dramatic spread of the fire means that some of those who have already moved are now in fresh danger.

The Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, Archbishop Fred Hiltz, has asked for “the prayers of the whole church” in response to a major wildfire in Alberta that has resulted in the town of Fort McMurray and neighbouring communities being subjected to an enforced evacuation as firefighters predict that much of the town will be destroyed.

The Diocese of California in the US-based Episcopal Church held an EcoConfirmation day to mark both Earth Day and the signing, at UN headquarters in New York, of the COP-21 climate change agreement. The event included a Cosmic Walk – a structured meditation on the history of creation.

A call for Anglicans to commemorate next year’s 500th anniversary of the Reformation and the commendation of a number of new inter-denominational agreements and reports were amongst a raft of ecumenical resolutions adopted by the Anglican Consultative Council when they met in Lusaka, Zambia, earlier this month.
