Nationalists in Northern Ireland must recognise that Ulster Protestants have rights too, the Anglican Primate of All Ireland, the Most Revd Robin Eames, said at the end of July. The Archbishop's comments were met with anger from the Sinn Fein, a Nationalist party which demanded that the Primate clarify the Church of IrelandÕs relationship with the Protestant Orange Order.

The Revd Christopher Gray was stabbed to death near the entrance of his vicarage in Anfield, Liverpool, on 13 August. His attacker had been visiting Mr Gray for advice and counselling and had an appointment. The assailant fled the scene in a stolen car but was later arrested.

On the evening of Sunday, 1st September 1996 the historic Porvoo Agreement will be signed in Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim, Norway. The agreement is between the British and Irish Anglican Churches and the Nordic and Baltic Lutheran Churches, and commits the Churches to a deepening fellowship and to new steps on the road to visible unity.

A Kuwaiti convert to Christianity, Robert Hussein, fears for his life after an Islamic court branded him an 'apostate'. Mr Hussein received death treats after speaking publicly about his conversion and was convicted by an Islamic court in in June of being an apostate who, under shari'a law, 'should be killed'.

Church leaders have failed to soften the British Government's Asylum and Immigration Bill. Despite an amendment passed in the House of Lords on 1 July with the backing of several bishops to soften the bill, this amendment was overturned by the House of Commons.
